Aug 29, 2020 · Owner replaced generator with alternator because the 4020 is indeed a hoss. Designed to run on row crops all day at full speed. Off and on hay use would not keep the batteries charged. Thats usually a linkage issue. Ours do it also. Usually if u go to reverse then back forward it will completley come out of park. Not saying it cant happen but the 4020 is a very well built tractor and the powershift transmission in it is practically indestructible. But when I crack the injectors nothing. There is a 5/16 bolt on the outward side of the injector pump. If I loosen this bolt, it will run normally but shoots fuel out the hole. Recently, after trying to start the tractor I noted the starter ran on after I released the key from the start position. The only way to stop the starter from turning was to removed the left battery terminal which resulted in a large spark. The John Deere 4020 is a reliable tractor, but it does have its fair share of problems. From transmission issues to hydraulic leaks, the 4020 can require regular maintenance and repairs. However, with proper care and attention, these problems can be minimized, allowing farmers to continue utilizing this iconic piece of machinery for years to come.It's also why Deere special ordered those pumps with an easily adjustable advance screw. 4020 is supposed to get a timing advance up around 16 engines degrees. That is a lot, and if it's not happening it can make a big difference in performance. 4020 is supposed to advance 2 engine degrees by 1000 engine RPM. If the sump screen was "completely plugged" you need to pull the final drives, repair the brakes and clean the rear end housing out and THEN start to sort out your hydraulic problems. You can do this behind the dash by taking off the hood cowl (I think that's what it's called). It has a threaded end so it can be shortened. The 4010 and VERY early (IIRC, pre-'65) 4020 tractors DO have a 3rd reverse. The later early models and on only have 2 reverse gears that are sped up. The the early ones, 1st reverse is the same speed as 3rd forward, 2nd reverse is like 5th and 3rd reverse is like 7th. So, 3rd reverse is 12mph.
